Our GFWC Connection
Our Heritage
The General Federation of Women's Clubs is an international organization dedicated to community improvement by enhancing the lives of others through volunteer service.
The origin of GFWC traces back to 1868, when journalist Jane Cunningham Croly (1829-1901) was denied admission to an all-male club because of her gender. Her response was swift; she formed a club for women named Sorosis—a Greek word meaning "an aggregation; a sweet flavor of many fruits."
In 1890, women's clubs from across the country joined hands to become the GFWC. More than a century later, we continue to adapt to the diverse lifestyles of women, remaining one of the most influential membership organizations in the country.

Advocacy in Action
Clubs and clubwomen are the local advocates for GFWC’s legislative agenda. Through our national network of grassroots advocates, the Federation gains its political influence.
Join the Movement: Sign up for the Legislative Action Center to track bills, contact your representatives, and take action on issues germane to GFWC Resolutions.
